Video Summary

"Once upon a time a very poor woodcutter?" Get a sneak peek at UMD Department of Music's production of Englebert Humperdinck's opera, Hansel and Gretel. Directed by Dr. Regina Zona, in collaboration with the Minnesota Ballet and members of the Lake Superior Youth Orchestra, it premieres January 28 at the Marshall Performing Arts Center.

Michael Monroe and Jim Brandenburg are long time friends who began a perfect collaboration when Monroe wrote music to accompany a 2003 PBS documentary about Ely photographer Jim Brandenburg's book, "Chased by the Light." It was Monroe's first foray into music without lyrics. With heartfelt sincerity and a poetic touch in both the lyrics and music, Monroe explores subtle, quiet places that spark the imagination. Tonight the Grand Marais musician inspires with his acoustic voice twining the human experience with the environment.

Highly honored and internationally recognized, Jim Brandenburg's photographs carry a global impact. His breathtaking images feature the subtle, quiet places that spark the imagination and touch the heart. Monroe's rich vocals, guitars and bamboo flutes create a poetic blend of music. The two internationally award-winning artists preview their mesmerizing, creative collaboration and share their understanding of Minnesota?s north woods and wilderness.
