State Representative Mary Murphy has been honored by the Minnesota Public Television Association on behalf of the public television stations serving the State. MPTA recognized Rep. Murphy of Hermantown, MN for her outstanding leadership in realizing the promise of the newly created Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund during the 2009-2010 Legislative Biennium. As Chair of the House Cultural and Outdoor Resources Finance Division, Rep. Murphy led the legislative effort to assure transparency and effectiveness in the use of funds provided by the 2008 Legacy Amendment.

Mary Murphy began her career in education, teaching Social Studies to students at Duluth Central High School. Teaching students about humanities, sociology, economics, history, civics, and most importantly government, led her to a second career.
Elected to the Minnesota House of Representatives in 1976, Murphy continued to teach until 1997. Throughout her legislative career, Murphy has focused on education, consumer protection, health care, criminal justice, women’s economic issues, labor and union advocacy, and jobs for the region.

Murphy has served on Judiciary Finance, Ethics, Higher Education and Workforce Development, Finance and Economic Competitiveness, Capital Investment, Cultural and Outdoor Resources Finance, Public Safety, Ways and Means, and Energy Committees; St. Louis County Legislative Delegation; Pension Commission and Legislative Coordinating Commissions; and as a delegate to State and National Democratic and AFL-CIO Conventions.
