In Fall, 2007, UMD Elementary Education candidates
created original lesson plans that
integrated literature about wolves with
science about wolves as part of the NATURE
grant project. UMD course work and candidate
research provided the basis for the
literature component of the lesson plans and
for lesson design. The International Wolf
Center provided a guest lecturer, artifacts
about wolves, the Center's wonderful web
site, and copies of science curricula about
wolves as major resources for candidate
development of the science component of
these integrated subject discipline lesson
plans. The UMD candidates were encouraged to
use whatever resources seemed most
applicable for teaching use with specific
grade levels of students. The academic
freedom to design original curriculum means
that the lesson plans are not sponsored or
approved by the project grant partners.
