Thanks to All of You Who Made it Happen!
The final resolution of the Federal budget for 2011, passed by the House and Senate in mid-April, included good news for public broadcasting. One program that funds station equipment needs was eliminated. However, the dollars appropriated for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting to fund current operations were subject to the same modest reduction of less than 1% applied to all nonmilitary discretionary expenditures. The budget agreement assures WDSE•WRPT Federal funding support through September, the end of the Federal government’s fiscal year.
We want to thank each of our members who took time over the last several months to engage their elected representatives through emails, letters and phone calls by sharing their thoughts on public funding for public television. You, and the two-thirds of American voters who oppose eliminating funding for public broadcasting, played an important role in forging this result. The debate on funding public broadcasting will certainly continue as a part of the broader discussion of budget priorities; your continued participation will be just as important in the days ahead.
You may have heard us say that member support makes your public television station possible so many times that the message has become trite. The reality was brought home this month, however, with news that WMFE, the PBS station serving Orlando, Florida, had been sold and will be leaving the PBS system. Insufficient support from the community - a market with eight times the number of households served by WDSE•WRPT - meant the station was no longer financially viable.
Whether demonstrated through a contribution or message to Congress, your support means this public television station remains strong and able to continue providing the programs you expect and enjoy. Thank you!
