This Month on Native Report

January 5 - Season 7 Episode 1

The season premiere opens with a special gathering of water bearers on the shores of Lake Superior for The Mother Earth Water Walk. Next, learn about one band's reintroduction of the sturgeon, a culturally important food source and attend a symposium addressing the protection of the sacred food staple, wild rice.

January 12 - Season 7 Episode 1

Join the 33rd Annual Keweenaw Bay Powwow as they honor community members and commemorate their status as a sovereign nation. Next, learn how the Bois Forte Band of Chippewa Boys and Girls Club and the Bush Foundation develop their mission of supporting young, emerging and current Native leaders.

January 19 - Season 7 Episode 1

Visit radio station KFAI and talk with producer Laura Waterman Wittstock. Next, meet Billy Frank, chairman at the National Congress of American Indians' annual conference, and learn about his efforts to protect treaty rights on the West Coast. Then, spend an afternoon learning about the Sami, the indigenous people of Northern Europe and Russia.

January 26 - Season 7 Episode 1

Visit a summer camp with the National Indian Youth Leadership Project. Next, meet Jean O'Brien, author of "Firsting and Lasting: Writing Indians Out of Existence in New England." Then, attend the first of its kind conference between 35 Native nations in the Midwest Region and The Bureau of Indian Affairs.
